I was born with a Christian name, my mama held me tight,
But the lawyer-liars came ‘round in the middle of the night.
They slapped a surname brand on me, tied it up with debt,
Said, “Welcome to the system, son—your mortgage ain’t paid yet.”

They mortgage every heartbeat, tax the breath as it pass.
Signed my soul with a surname, in a game rigged from the start,
But my God owns my spirit, and He’s breaking me apart—

He lives inside the courthouse, wears a paper suit of blue.
I tried to pay his debts, but the bill just grew and grew,
Till I learned about my freedom, and the truth came shining through.

And the only thing they own is that legal paper chain.
